Let’s talk about real estate showings etiquette for a sec.
Sometimes there are showing instructions such as remove shoes (Hint: where slip-ons) or don’t let the cat out. We respect these instructions of course. However it should (but doesn’t) go without saying that a seller’s/tenant’s home is a private place. They keep valuables there. Valuables include the obvious large ticket items, but also be aware that sentimental items, pets, private information are all very valuable. We have a right and an invitation to view the property but no right to poke through things that are none of our business, no right to interfere with animals we don’t know, no right to disrespect the residents by walking in mud, leaving doors unlocked or moving personal property around.
The Real Estate Showing Window
We also have a showing window to abide by. Super important.
We will be authorized to enter the property during a very specific 1-2 hour window. Entering prematurely or staying after the time allotted is technically trespassing! How would you feel if a perfect stranger keyed into your house before you were expecting them? The last thing you do before leaving the house is shower, or use the potty, right?! Yep… they do too. Something’s can never be unseen or undone!
Care and Consideration – 10 Tips
- Don’t touch other peoples stuff!
- Don’t eat their food
- Try not to use their toilet… and REALLY DON’T if you can see the place is winterized or doesn’t offer you toilet paper.
- You may not open their dresser drawers or poke around at the papers on their desk. It’s none of your business and it’s nothing to do with buying their home.
- Please don’t handle pets that are not yours. Its stressful for them and can be dangerous for you.
- Take your shoes off if asked.
- Do not unlock doors or windows unless you ask permission from Realtor first – and lock them again after.
- Do not adjust the thermostat
- Do not let your kids play with the toys there, or jump on the beds.
- Do not bring your beverages and snacks with you into someone else’s home.
