Home Improvement Gone Awry!
So there you are, the proud new owner of a new house. It has taken a boatload of your money and for the first couple of years, it will be a stretch financially, but worth it. You know its a good investment – but only if you take care of it, right?
Like all houses, it requires maintenance and the odd improvement. The sunshine is hard on wood and paint in the high plains of Colorado. You could do it yourself of course, but really it’s not your thing and you’re busy anyway. But who will help and stay in your meager budget?
Fortune smiles on you… For a short time!
Later, this is the story your community gets to chuckle over (with sympathy).
A young blonde girl in her late teens, wanting to earn some extra money for the summer, decided to hire herself out as a “handy woman” and started canvassing a nearby well-to-do neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do.
“Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint the porch” he said. “How much will you charge me?”
Delighted, the girl quickly responded, “How about $50?”
The man agreed and told her that the paint and brushes and everything she would need were in the garage. The man’s wife, hearing the conversation, said to her husband, “Does she realize our porch goes all the way around the house?”
“That’s a bit cynical, isn’t it?” he responded.
The wife replied, “You’re right. I guess I’m starting to believe all those dumb blonde jokes.”
A few hours later the blonde came to the door to collect her money.
“You’re finished already??” the startled husband asked.
“Yes,” the blonde replied, “and I even had paint left over so I gave it two coats.”
Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the $50 and handed it to her along with a $10 tip.
“Thank you,” the blonde said, “And, by the way, it’s not a Porch, it’s a Lexus.”
I did have a laugh when a friend sent me this. After all, I drive a Lexus and I’m into home improvement! Then I thought about it and realized that crazy as it sounds, it can be really hard to know who to trust in and around your house. Learning that a person is not entirely qualified, experienced, or insured after the damage is done, is too late.
I keep a database of all sorts of professionals from trusted handymen and general contractors to locksmiths, cleaners, gutter and roof specialists and tree trimmers. If its home improvement or home maintenance related, I probably have a person for you.
